Henna at Sam's: Everything You Need to Know About Our Mehndi Designs
From bridal mehndi to simple hand designs, henna is one of our most beloved services. Here's a complete guide to henna at Sam's — what to expect, how to care for your design, and how to make the color last as long as possible.
Henna has been used for centuries as a form of body art, celebration, and self-expression. At Sam's Threading Beauty Salon, our henna designs range from delicate floral patterns to intricate full-hand bridal mehndi — all created freehand by our skilled artists using natural henna paste.
Whether you're preparing for a wedding, Eid, a festival, or simply want a beautiful temporary design, here's everything you need to know.
What Is Henna?
Henna (also called mehndi) is a natural dye made from the leaves of the *Lawsonia inermis* plant. When applied to the skin, it leaves a rich reddish-brown stain that fades gradually over 1 to 3 weeks.
At Sam's, we use 100% natural henna paste — no black henna, no chemical additives. Natural henna is safe for all skin types and produces the warm, earthy tones that are the hallmark of authentic mehndi.
Our Henna Services & Pricing
We offer henna designs for every occasion and budget:
Simple designs — Small, elegant patterns on the hand or wrist. Perfect for everyday wear or a first-time henna experience. Starting at $20.
Medium designs — More detailed patterns covering the palm or back of the hand with flowing motifs. Starting at $35.
Full hand designs — Intricate patterns covering the entire hand, including fingers. A stunning choice for special occasions. Starting at $50.
Bridal mehndi — Our most elaborate service. Full bridal henna typically covers both hands and can extend up the arms. Pricing varies based on complexity and coverage — contact us for a custom quote.
Walk-ins are welcome for smaller designs. For bridal mehndi or large custom designs, we recommend booking in advance to ensure we have enough time for your appointment.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Henna application is a relaxing, meditative experience. Here's how it works:
- Design consultation. We'll discuss the style, size, and placement of your design. If you have reference photos, bring them along — or trust our artist to create something beautiful freehand.
- Application. Our artist applies the henna paste using a cone, drawing the design directly onto your skin. Depending on the complexity, this can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours for full bridal mehndi.
- Drying time. Once the design is complete, the paste needs to dry on your skin. This takes about 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, you'll want to stay still and keep the area warm.
- Sealing. We apply a sugar-lemon mixture to the dried paste to help it stay on longer and deepen the color.
- Removal. After the paste has dried completely (ideally after 4 to 8 hours), you scrape it off gently — never wash it off. The longer you leave the paste on, the darker and longer-lasting the stain will be.
How to Get the Darkest Color
The depth of your henna color depends on how well you care for the paste while it's on your skin. Here's how to maximize your results:
- Keep the paste on as long as possible. Ideally 6 to 8 hours, or overnight. The longer it stays, the darker the stain.
- Keep the area warm. Heat activates the dye. Wrapping the design loosely in tissue or plastic wrap helps retain warmth.
- Apply the sugar-lemon mixture every hour or so while the paste is drying to keep it moist and help it adhere.
- Avoid water for the first 24 hours after removing the paste. Water is the biggest enemy of fresh henna — even washing your hands can lighten the stain significantly in the first day.
- Apply a thin layer of coconut or olive oil after removing the paste. Oil creates a barrier that slows fading.
How Long Does Henna Last?
A well-cared-for henna design typically lasts 1 to 3 weeks. The palms of the hands tend to hold color the longest because the skin is thicker. The back of the hand and fingers fade a little faster.
Factors that affect longevity:
- Frequent handwashing speeds up fading. Use mild soap and avoid scrubbing the design.
- Chlorine (pools, hot tubs) fades henna quickly.
- Exfoliating products remove the stained skin cells faster.
- Skin type — oily skin tends to fade henna faster than dry skin.
Henna for Special Occasions
Henna is a beautiful addition to any celebration:
Weddings — Bridal mehndi is a cherished tradition in South Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African cultures. We create stunning bridal designs that can be as traditional or contemporary as you'd like.
Eid & religious celebrations — Henna is a beloved part of Eid festivities. We welcome families and groups — call ahead to arrange group appointments.
Birthdays & parties — Henna is a unique and memorable activity for birthday parties, bridal showers, and bachelorette events. Ask us about group bookings.
Festivals & events — Whether it's a cultural festival, a school event, or a community gathering, our artists are available for on-site henna.
Is Henna Safe?
Natural henna is safe for most people. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Avoid black henna. Black henna contains a chemical called PPD (para-phenylenediamine) that can cause severe allergic reactions and permanent scarring. We only use natural henna at Sam's.
- Patch test for sensitive skin. If you have very sensitive skin or a history of skin reactions, we recommend a small patch test before a full design.
- Avoid henna during pregnancy if you have any concerns — consult your doctor first.
