Lash Extensions 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Appointment

Thinking about getting lash extensions for the first time? Here's your complete guide — from choosing the right style and length to what to expect during your appointment and how to make them last.

Lash extensions are one of the most popular beauty treatments we offer at Sam's Threading Beauty Salon — and it's easy to see why. They add length, volume, and definition to your natural lashes without mascara, giving you a polished, put-together look from the moment you wake up.

But if you've never had them before, the process can feel a little mysterious. What style should you choose? Does it hurt? How long do they last? We're answering all of it right here.

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are individual synthetic, silk, or mink fibers that are bonded one by one to your natural lashes using a semi-permanent adhesive. The result is fuller, longer lashes that look completely natural — or as dramatic as you want them.

Unlike strip lashes, which sit on top of your eyelid, extensions are attached directly to each individual lash. That means they move with your natural lashes, feel weightless, and look seamless.

Choosing Your Style

At Sam's, we offer several lash styles to match every look and lifestyle:

Classic Lashes — One extension per natural lash. This gives a clean, mascara-like effect that's perfect for everyday wear. Starting at $40.

Individual Lashes — A customized application that adds targeted volume and length where you want it most. Great for filling in sparse areas or enhancing your natural shape.

Volume Lashes — Multiple ultra-fine extensions fanned out and applied to each natural lash. The result is a fuller, fluffier look with incredible depth. Starting at $80.

Hybrid Lashes — A mix of classic and volume techniques for a textured, dimensional look that sits between natural and dramatic. Starting at $90.

Mink Lashes — Our most luxurious option. Mink fibers are incredibly soft and lightweight, creating a natural-looking flutter that's hard to achieve with synthetic lashes. Full set starting at $110.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your lash appointment at Sam's is a relaxing experience from start to finish. Here's what happens:

  • Consultation. We'll talk about the look you're going for — length, curl, volume, and style. If you have a photo of lashes you love, bring it along.
  • Prep. You'll lie down comfortably while we cleanse your lashes and place soft gel pads under your eyes to protect your lower lashes.
  • Application. Using precision tweezers, our technician applies each extension one at a time. The process takes between 90 minutes and 2 hours depending on the style. Most clients find it so relaxing they fall asleep.
  • Finishing touches. We'll fan your lashes dry and review the results together. You'll leave with a full, beautiful set.

How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

Lash extensions last as long as your natural lash cycle — typically 3 to 4 weeks before you'll notice significant shedding. Most clients come in for a fill every 2 to 3 weeks to keep their lashes looking full.

A few things that affect longevity:

  • Oil-based products break down the adhesive faster. Use oil-free makeup remover and avoid applying oily serums near your lash line.
  • Rubbing your eyes causes premature shedding. Be gentle.
  • Sleeping on your face can bend and misshape extensions. A silk pillowcase helps.
  • Steam and heat weaken the bond. Avoid saunas and steam rooms in the first 24–48 hours after your appointment.

Lash Extension Aftercare

The first 24 hours are the most important:

  • Keep them dry. Avoid water, steam, and sweat for the first 24 hours to let the adhesive fully cure.
  • Don't use mascara. Extensions eliminate the need for mascara entirely — and applying it can damage the bond.
  • Brush daily. Use the spoolie we provide to gently brush your lashes each morning and keep them looking neat.
  • Avoid oil-based products near your eyes.

Are Lash Extensions Right for You?

Lash extensions work beautifully for most people, but there are a few things to consider:

  • If you have very sparse or short natural lashes, classic extensions may not provide as much volume as you'd like — volume or hybrid sets are a better fit.
  • If you have sensitive eyes or skin, let us know before your appointment. We use gentle, professional-grade adhesives and can do a patch test.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before your appointment and bring your glasses.
